Dover Big Local's Hub launch day

Dover Big Local Hub launch

Although the DBL hub has been open for a few weeks, we wanted to celebrate. On 17th February, local families enjoyed free facepainting, information on planting for bees, crafts and displays by partner organisations as well as a chance to chat about their ideas for Dover. Our formal opening was confirmed by the cutting of a ribbon by Jim Parmenter Dover Athletic Club Chairman and some of the junior team.

Do you want to run a community event or workshop and need a venue? It could be a coffee morning for young parents, a bring & buy sale, a youth bike-maintenance project, a tea dance for over 60s, an art and craft group …the possibilities are endless, or maybe you would like to know more about how to get funding to run a project in the Big Local area? You can now drop into the hub for a coffee and a chat with Trevor or Linda to see what we can achieve together. Volunteers are also most welcome to help us staff the hub, or to become Partners in Dover Big Local and help to shape what we do next - do pop in to see us! The hub is open from 9am - 4pm Monday to Friday and some Saturdays, subject to avaiability of staff.

Showcasing Art at the Hub

Local artists can now show their work at Dover Big Local's Hub in the Charlton Centre. Sam Capell, from DBL Art 31, is managing the art displays. The first private view was a great success and work by Dianna Harrison can be seen until 4th April, followed by a monthly changing show of arts and craft work by local people and groups. If you would like to display work at the hub contact Sam at samcapell@live.com . Art 31 are a subgroup of Dover Big Local with a focus on the arts and welcome new members who have an interest or are practicing artists, musicians and performers to join in with projects and mutual support for arts events in Dover. Contact Clare Smith at clare@dadonline.eu for further information.

Dover Big Local's Tourism Research Project

A contract has been awarded to Tourism Works, a NE Kent based firm, to carry out research, the output from which will form the Terms of Reference for an individual, group of individuals or an organisation to manage and coordinate the tourism sector in Dover. That research is now ongoing and it is intended that everyone who is involved in, or is impacted by tourism will get an opportunity to provide a point of view. This will be achieved either by face to face interview, questionnaire or workshop activity. Anyone who wishes to provide input and has not been contacted through any of the other methods may do so by contacting Tourism Works directly at fran.warrington@tourismworks.co.uk. We particularly need to know the extent of what is already on offer in Dover and how organisations already work together plus how they see things working in the future. Where can things be improved? What new initiatives would be valuable? Please get in touch.

Bluebirds Trail Update

Work will soon begin on The Dover Society's Lottery-funded Dover Bluebird Heritage Trail. The self-guided trail, marked by bronze pavement markers and supported by a free guide booklet, website and app, will highlight Dover’s many heritage assets. A new Community Engagement Worker has been appointed and will involve local individuals, schools and businesses in the creation, understanding and promotion of the trail as well as setting up volunteer ‘test teams’ and working with them to test the project’s outputs. The trail project is expected to be completed by September 2016. Look out for news of workshops and events as the project develops.
